Periodontal Consultation – Dr Justin Darby BDSc (Hons) MDSc (Perio)
Your dentist has recommended you have an assessment with our visiting periodontal specialist, Dr Justin Darby to discuss your gum health.
What is a Periodontist?
Periodontics is a specialist field of dentistry that deals with gum and bone tissues surrounding your teeth. A Periodontist treats gum conditions and places dental implants, and has completed an additional 3 years of specialist university training after becoming a dentist.
Dr Justin Darby has worked at David Cox Dental since 2005.
What to expect at your first visit?
Your first appointment is an opportunity to gather as much information as possible to assist treatment planning.
- A short interview
to listen to your concerns, symptoms, history, reason for referral, and discuss your medical and dental health, including any medications you may currently be taking,
- An examination of your mouth
- Assessment of any dental radiographs
Please remember to bring along any X-rays recommend by your general dentist.
Further radiographs may be taken for additional information. Dr Darby will discuss the findings from this information and outline the nature of your gum condition. He will offer alternatives of care for you to help improve your periodontal care. Please ask questions, as we will want to keep you informed.
Do I have gum disease?
Periodontal disease is usually a slow disease and most people are not aware that they have it. The most obvious signs of periodontal disease are: bleeding gums, bad breath, bad taste, red or swollen gums, loose teeth, receding gums.
Gum disease presents in many different forms, ranging from very mild (gingivitis) to severe (periodontitis) with varying forms of soft tissue destruction and possible risk of tooth loss. Proper identification of periodontitis is considered a specialist field of dentistry, and is therefore important to get a thorough assessment of your condition with a Periodontist to outline the nature and extent of your condition.
Dr Darby will discuss your situation based on his assessment, and outline what dental and gum implications you may or may not have in the future.
What type of treatment will I need?
Various treatment options for you will be discussed in detail with you during your initial consultation. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and Dr Darby will provide a report to you summarising your condition, which will be forwarded to you and your referring dentist.
How much will this cost?
A full treatment costing for your dental implant treatment will be provided in a report to you summarising your condition. All ADA Item Codes will be included with this report to check with your health insurance fund for rebate entitlements.
Initial Consultation fees with Dr Darby will vary depending on the nature of your referral, and will be discussed with you at the time you book your appointment.
The fees charged in this practice are kept in accordance with the level of care provided, ensuring the highest quality of treatment possible. Should you have any questions regarding the fees quoted to you, please contact our Practice Manager, Stella Morena.
